A couple of things, a
discovery and a question.
First, the discovery:
The Doughnut Egg (kind of) undoes the YourInMySightsNow
Egg. If you do the Doughnut Egg, the turret disappears
from the tower. You can put the turret back by doing the
YIMSN Egg the same way, but it doesn't reset the game so that
the cannon will fire again.
Therein lies my question:
Has anyone gotten it to fire twice? I've gotten it
to fire at all the marker switch "snap" points for the
tower... ...and I forgot to try it inbetween snap points, to
tell you the truth... ...but I can't get it to fire twice in
the same game.
EDIT: Well, it turns out
you can't fire between snap points, but if you go back and
align the tower properly with one, you can go back out and it
will still fire. And still only once...

Actually, inputting
anything into the fireplace grid after the plus negates
the gun. Just push a random rectangle or two, and then
the red button -- the gun disappears.
Good discovery
on the different snap points. I thought I had tried
others but coudln't get it to fire. I went back, and
yes, it works at all of them. And then look at the gun
when the tower rotation is not at a snap point -- from what I
can tell, it's always pointing in the same direction (between
stoneship and the gear). So the tower really doesn't
rotate with the gun triggered, it just "snaps" to the snap
points. I wonder if it does the same thing without the
gun.

Well, just a
suggestion...
This gun seems to be aimed rather high,
too high to hit almost anything.
But there is
one thing. What happens if you "pump" that tree
by the cabin as high as it will go then activate the egg,
aiming it at the tree? The gun makes the same sound as
the tree does, so maybe that's Cyan trying to say "try the
tree!"
I'm too tired to do it right now, but everyone
else try it!

In the Doughnut egg, described at http://home.comcast.net/~zardoz99/doughnut_egg.htm
, you must input Spyder's previous strings in the
library fireplace in a spiral, starting at the
upper-lefthand corner and winding clockwise.
WELL, if you do the same with this new string
EXCEPT winding counter-clockwise, you end up with a plus
shape or, more accurately, a crosshair!
| Just a
little note: If you enter the string clockwise, starting
at the upper-righthand corner of the grid, you get the
same crosshair pattern. I think, that's something to do with
geometry
<EDIT> It actually is geometry: it's
called symmetry! You get the same pattern going clockwise from
the lower-lefthand corner or counter-clockwise starting from
the lower righthand corner.

Y'yeah, PC, I had the
same thought last night while I was in bed... ...thanks for
reminding! :-)
<EDIT> Well, I tried it,
and it didn't have any obvious effect... ...I even managed to
start the tree going slowly, run and do the egg, run and turn
the flame up higher, hop IN the tree and be at its top IN it
when the gun went off. No dice there, either. :-(
Ah, well...

just noticed Ti'ana's grave on Myst for the first time!! :-)
P.S. --I thought it was the same sound as the tree,
too, but it's subtly different when you hear them right next
to each other. ;-)

Shorah everyone. I was
thinking. If Myst Island is really gonna turn into Myst
Mayhem, that's a pretty big egg, and probably would involve
some work. They wouldn't make it TOO easy. So I was thinking,
based on when spyder gave us the donut egg he said "Solve this
and then I can give you YourInMySightsNow" that we may need to
activitate all the eggs in the order they were given to us in
order to get the entire egg, otherwise we just get bits and
pieces. Another thought is that we have things to do on Myst,
on Rime, and something we havent figured out on Mechanical.
Maybe we will have stuff to do for the other Ages. For
example, maybe doing something on Selenitic will give us the
flying spaceship, and doing something on Stoneship will give
us the whateveritwas in the fountain? Also, on the Mechanical
thing we havent figured out. The clue we didn't get was the
Mac Myst Masterpiece clue. I was thinking. Is there something
in Mechanical in the Mac Myst Masterpiece edition that isnt in
the PC version? If there is, that's probably what the answer
is. It seems like a likely theory, but how do we figure it
out. You'd almost need to have both versions of the game
playing side by side to compare. It would be rather tough.
Okay, thats my rambling for today

Great
ideas in that post! However, concerning the Mechanical
egg, I think Doug or some other Cyanist said the egg was
actually for the Mac Myst Masterpiece game.
However, the few people that have MacMME haven't been
able to enable the egg in Mac MME either. So maybe the
whole "cyanist confirming the egg" thing is a rumor.

Well...... The turret
gun isn't exactly like the one in the MYST Mayhem pic......
And torsk looks like the gun but without the video screen
thing and the target sight I think..... Hmmmm.... I agree that
there is something up. I went to Mechanical with torsk and
YIMSN activated and I didn't find much but something seemed
amiss....... Maybe it was just me?

No, I'm
going to put them up on my eggsite (and edit the DOUG egg as I
promised).
As for YIMSN (I'm tired of writing
YourInMySightsNow, so I've acronymed it), I suspect this is
all for this egg. To repeat myself, there are two
references you can extract from a save game file: YIMSN and
YIMSNAction. The former is clearly the egg trigger and
the latter is the egg action. Having said that, it
doesn't mean YIMSN isn't part of a bigger egg.
Now I'm
really wondering about the m3dplayer. (If you don't know
what I'm talking about, go here.) The torsk gun is first-person,
while the m3dplayer would seem to be 3rd person. If so,
that would rule out them being linked. Hmmm . . . . .
I may have to do more hex diving.

Zardoz
says (on his website) that he thinks these "warp" references
are when the camera "locks down" in a specific place, like at

Even so, I guess the "pit" would be either the room
with the drawer that won't open, or the room with the imager.
Jeez, I sure hope Spyder returns soon with more

stupid question, seeing's how I know nothing about
programming or anything. But why couldn't those
m3dplayer references merely refer to some basic
structure of the 1st person player that we always
control in the game? The "foot" item could refer
to the spot on the ground the player is located, while
"head" could be the camera
location. | There are
no stupid questions, only stupid answers! Seriously, if
you've started to snoop inside the dni files, look in the shp
directory (I can't remember exactly where but there's one
someplace. And BTW, several months ago, someone wrote a
Dni extractor program, so we've been messing around with the
files inside the dni files for awhile - so you're following a
time honored tradition for egg hunting!). You'll find a
m3dplayer.shp along with a bat.shp, sole.shp, and so forth.
All of these are 3d objects that move around in the
game. Hypothesis: m3dplayer is also a 3d shape,
one that we trigger somehow and then (possibly) control.

| My
interpretation of the references inside the savegame files is
totally made up, in the sense that I am not a programmer and
have not been able to get Og or any other Cyantist to spill
the beans. My ideas on what various terms mean come from
looking at their association with places or objects that are
easy to locate. Thus, I think "pit" equals the top of
the elevator because of references like this (from a
savegame): aurora..sn_isl_pit_aurora_ctrl_box_stand
sn_island_pit.. auroralighredreset
sn_island_pit..saaurorablastemit
But it also
encompasses Atrus's study (the "nook" ) as there are
references to events/objects that are there:
sn_island_pit..ri_nook_openthejournal
sn_island_pit..ri_nook_turnthepageplus
So what do
we make of all this? I HAVE NO FRIGGIN' IDEA! --
ACH, sorry about that language. For those who wish to
reduce their sanity by dipping into a typical savegame, I've
posted a heavily manipulated one here. It's actually a list of all the
"references" in a typical savegame. Speculate away,
fellow egghunters!

Cool, Zardoz, thanks
for the clarification! :-) I'll take a look at that
directory ASAP!
In the meantime, I've done a little
research on the Tower Rotation and its "snap"ping behavior.
Indeed, with or without the YIMSN egg, the tower doesn't
rotate smoothly with the control on the library map; when it's
not at a snap point, it defaults back around to "pointing" due
east. This is the place where the library elevator
doesn't have to rotate to align itself properly. Also,
when the tower is at various snap points, the elevator's
rotation does seem to adjust, but not entirely properly;
for instance, there's almost a 180° difference between
the Rocketship and Gear switches, but the elevator rotation
doesn't seem to make that much compensation.
Just
thought I'd g'head and share that, even though it has no
impact on this egg whatsoever... ...kinda interesting
nonetheless...! :-P

P.S.
Zardoz-- properly, that's "There are no stupid
questions, only inquisitive idiots." :-)

I too noticed the
turret points East when not at a snap point. I tried to get it
to point at the Clock to match the Mayhem picture HERE , but it wouldn't cooperate. This
probably has nothing to do with the Eggs but it was a
bit annoying. Maybe when we get more clues we will be able to
point the turret elsewhere? urm, I doubt it.

Sorry to reply to
myself, but this is a different topic, plus I wanted to get
people's attention with a new post. I've extracted all
the mp3's from the pera.dni file that really got my attention
as possibly belonging to some sort of FPS game. I've
archived them into a zip file, which y'all can download by
right-clicking here and choosing "Save Target As..."
(Of course, you'll have to have some kind of Zip utility
to open it.) I'm not sure about some of them; some ring
a bell, so they might be in the game somewhere. Others,
like Long Jump.wav, are totally FPS-reminiscent. Get
back to me and tell me what y'all think!

I
asked about that quite a while ago (back in the good ol' days
of the RivenGuild) and people told me they we're ambient
sounds that you hear when you get trapped in one of the books.
I still don't agree with that, since the "trapped in
the book" sounds are mixed right in with the music file.
I think it has something to do with being gassed
that we just haven't found yet. I don't know why, I just
have a hunch.

Nothing very new to
report but I do have some observations and theories.
75th - You asked about the thing on top of the
Library. After looking closely at THIS pic I think it's a gun with a backpack
full of ammo. Maybe a minigun. It reminded me of the movie
Predator.
Since the Torsk Egg can be carried to the
Mechanical Age I pointed the Turret Egg at the Mechanical
gears, linked to that Age, and waited. heh. I really didn't
think the cannon would shoot to another Age, but it was worth
trying.
The most "remarkable" things (beside the
people running around) on the Mayhem pic are the Torsk Egg, the Turret
Egg, and the spaceship flying. I enabled both the Torsk and
Turret Eggs then went to the Selenitic ship. Again, I didn't
really expect it to fly over MYST Island but the fact that
there is a Flying mode in realMYST and the ship is
flying in the Mayhem shot got me thinking.
I think the
next Egg will have another pattern in the Fireplace. Consider
this: Doughnuts was LOGO OH. Turret was LOGO +. The next may
be LOGO and some other pattern. Maybe.
Of this I'm
confident: There must be an Egg in Mechanical. Why else would
we be able to carry the Torsk Egg there?
